Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about home insulation in Ireland and how our service works.

About Our Service

What is InsulationAdvice?
InsulationAdvice is a free service that connects homeowners in Ireland with local insulation installers. You tell us what you need, we match you with an installer, and they provide you with a quote.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free. You will never be charged by us. Installers pay to receive enquiries through our platform. That's how we keep the service free for you.
Do you install insulation?
No. We're a matching service, not an insulation company. We connect you with independent local installers. The quote, the work, and the materials are between you and the installer.
Is there any obligation?
None. You can review the quote and decide in your own time. If you choose not to go ahead, you don't need to do anything. There's no contract, no deposit, and we won't chase you up.
What areas do you cover?
All of Ireland. Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, and everywhere in between.

Attic Insulation

How much does attic insulation cost in Ireland?
Attic insulation typically costs between €800 and €2,500 depending on the size of your attic, the current insulation depth, and accessibility. SEAI grants of up to €2,000 are available for eligible homes (up to €2,500 for first-time buyers and qualifying welfare recipients), which can significantly reduce the out-of-pocket cost. The best way to get an accurate price is to request a free quote.
What depth of attic insulation do I need?
Current building regulations recommend a minimum of 300mm of insulation in your attic. Many older homes have 100mm or less. Topping up from 100mm to 300mm can reduce heat loss through your roof by up to 50%.
How long does attic insulation take to install?
Most attic insulation jobs are completed in a single day. Larger homes or attics requiring preparation work (boarding, ventilation) may take a day and a half. Your installer will confirm the timeline when quoting.
Will attic insulation make a noticeable difference?
Yes. Up to 30% of a home's heat is lost through the roof. Properly insulating your attic to 300mm is one of the most cost-effective energy upgrades you can make, typically paying for itself within 2–3 years through lower heating bills.

Cavity Wall Insulation

How do I know if my walls have cavities?
Most Irish homes built between the 1930s and the early 2000s have cavity walls. That's two layers of block or brick with an air gap between them. Your installer can confirm this with a borescope inspection. Homes built before the 1930s tend to be solid wall, and newer homes are often already insulated.
How much does cavity wall insulation cost?
Cavity wall insulation for a typical 3-bed semi-detached house costs between €1,000 and €2,500 before grants. SEAI grants of up to €1,800 are available depending on your property type (up to €2,300 for qualifying welfare recipients). The work is usually completed in a few hours with minimal disruption.
Is cavity wall insulation messy or disruptive?
Not at all. The insulation material (usually bonded bead or blown fibre) is pumped into the cavity through small holes drilled in the external wall. The holes are filled and matched to your existing finish. Most jobs are done in 3–4 hours with no internal disruption.

External Wall Insulation

What is external wall insulation (EWI)?
External wall insulation involves fixing insulation boards to the outside of your home and covering them with a protective render finish. It's ideal for solid-wall homes that can't have cavity fill, and it also refreshes the appearance of your property.
How much does external wall insulation cost?
EWI typically costs between €8,000 and €25,000 depending on the size of your home and the finish chosen. SEAI grants of up to €8,000 are available for detached homes, making it significantly more affordable. It's one of the most effective upgrades for older solid-wall homes.
Does external wall insulation need planning permission?
In most cases, external wall insulation falls under exempted development and doesn't require planning permission. However, if your home is in an architectural conservation area or is a protected structure, you should check with your local authority before proceeding.

Grants & BER

What SEAI grants are available for insulation?
SEAI offers grants for attic insulation (up to €2,000), cavity wall insulation (up to €1,800), external wall insulation (up to €8,000), and internal dry lining (up to €4,500). Grant amounts vary by property type. First-time buyers and homeowners on qualifying welfare payments may receive higher amounts. See the full breakdown on seai.ie. Your installer can help you understand which grants apply to your home.
How do I apply for an SEAI insulation grant?
You apply through the SEAI's online portal at seai.ie. You'll need to get a BER assessment first, then select a registered contractor to carry out the work. The grant is paid after the work is completed and a post-works BER assessment confirms the improvement.
Will insulation improve my BER rating?
Almost certainly. Insulation is one of the biggest factors in BER ratings. Upgrading attic insulation alone can improve your rating by 1–2 grades. Combining attic and wall insulation often moves a home from a D or E rating to a B, which also increases property value.
